Bishop denies Church not encouraging PSNI recruitment
A bishop has denied accusations that the Catholic Church is not doing enough to encourage young Catholics into the PSNI.
In an interview with a local morning newspaper, PSNI senior director of human resources Joe Stewart said the Church needed to do more to encourage young people into the force and a career in the police still seemed a "more acceptable career within the Protestant community, and not within the Catholic community, and that is down to people who have got influence in society to change that".
However, Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor Donal McKeown hit back by claiming it was up to the PSNI and local politicians to attract more young people to apply for a position in the force and that the Catholic Church would not be used " as a weapon in an essentially political argument".
Bishop McKeown made his comments on today's Talk Back show on Radio Ulster.

Belfast Priest Returns To Duty
A west Belfast priest who was at the centre of a police investigation has returned to the ministry. Father Hugh Kennedy stepped down from his duties as administrator of St Peter's Cathedral in 2011. At the time, the Diocese said it referred information about Fr Kennedy to the PSNI in accordance with its child safeguarding procedures.
