Belfast Priest Returns To Duty

A west Belfast priest who was at the centre of a police investigation has returned to the ministry.

Father Hugh Kennedy stepped down from his duties as administrator of St Peter's Cathedral in 2011.

At the time, the Diocese said it referred information about Fr Kennedy to the PSNI in accordance with its child safeguarding procedures.

In November last year, the police completed their investigation and said they not not be prosecuting him. After a more recent internal church review, it was agreed that all relevant authorities were satisfied that Fr Kennedy should return to the church.

In a statement, Bishop Noel Treanor confirmed the priest had returned to his duties.

He said: "Following a PSNI investigation and a more recent internal Church review, all relevant agencies, including the statutory authorities, are satisfied that Fr Kennedy should return to ministry.

"At no time was Fr Kennedy charged with any criminal offence or allegation nor was he subject to interview by the PSNI.

"I wish to acknowledge and thank all those who supported Fr Hugh Kennedy over the past two difficult years and I ask all to continue to support him and this parish community on his return to ministry."
