36-Year-Old Man Murdered

A 36-year-old man has been shot in Newtownabbey on the outskirts of north Belfast.

The man has been named as Danny McKay.

The victim was murdered in the Longlands area at about 20:30 yesterday evening.

At least two men are reported to have been involved in the attack, which saw Mr McKay shot six times. He died at the scene.

Police are currently investigating a potential link to a burnt-out silver Volkswagen Bora which had been hijacked earlier and was then found in Ardmollen Place in west Belfast.

The Belfast Telegraph has reported a potential drugs connection to the murder.

The newspaper said: "Local people believe Mr McKay may have been targeted because of a row over drugs, possibly involving dissident republicans."

First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness have released a statement condemning the attacks.

The Ministers said: "There can be no justification for this type of attack and those behind it need to be taken off our streets. Actions like this have no place in society and those who carried out this murder have nothing constructive to offer.

"Violence plays no part in our shared future and we would appeal to anyone with any information on this murder to contact the PSNI."
