NI Submariner Admits Secrets Charges
A Royal Navy submariner from Northern Ireland has admitted in court to collecting secret coding programmes which could have been potentially harmful to UK security.
Petty officer Edward Devenney, 30, from Strabane, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to gathering information about encryption programmes in breach of the Official Secrets Act.
He also admitted to meeting two people he thought were from the Russian secret service and discussing secret information.
Devenney has admitted a charge of misconduct in a public office after discussing with the two men information relating to the movement of nuclear submarines.
The Official Secrets Act charge was in relation to his collecting information in a way that was prejudicial to the safety or interests of the British state between November 2011 and March 7 this year.
But he denied a second count of communicating information to another person.
Devenney is due to be sentenced on December 12 at the Old Bailey.
Mr Justice Saunders told him: "Your sentence will be adjourned to December 12 when I will hear all the matters and consider them all. Until then you are remanded in custody."
Parts of the hearing will be held in secret.
It is alleged that Devenney collected details of 'crypto material'; programmes used to encrypt secret information that could be useful to an enemy.
