Drink-Drive Killer Pleads Guilty To More Offences

A banned driver who was jailed for causing the death of a nurse while drink driving has pleaded guilty to more driving offences.

Charles Anthony Joseph Barett, of no fixed abode, has pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance on the Falls Road in west Belfast on 29 June last year.

The 36-year-old has been remanded in custody.

Thirteen years ago Barret admitted causing the death of off-duty nurse Maureen Sheehan in west Belfast.

The incident happened in March 2000 when mother-of-seven Mrs Sheehan was driving to work.

She was killed when her car was hit by Barrett’s, as well as one other vehicle.

Then in April 2001, Barrett pleaded guilty and admitted causing Mrs Sheehan’s death by dangerous driving.

He was jailed for seven years and banned from driving for ten years.

Later the same year, Barrett was given an additional two years in jail when he pleaded guilty to hijacking a taxi and driving it dangerously three days after being granted bail for the killing.

Barrett has now been remanded and will be sentenced next month when pre-sentence probation reports have been compiled.
