Letterkenny loses 250 jobs in textiles sector
Around 250 jobs are to go in Letterkenny, following the news that Unifi Textured Yarns are to close their plant in the town, representing a huge loss for the local economy.
The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Harney said she was very disappointed at the company's unexpected announcement that it is to reduce its workforce at its Letterkenny facility in Donegal.
The job losses represent around 40% of the facility's entire workforce, and the firm has been a major employer in the Letterkenny area for nearly 20 years. It is thought that a significant number of the redundancies will come from the supervisory and middle management levels.
The Tánaiste said "This announcement is dreadful news for the workers and the wider community. Unifi has been a major valued employer in Letterkenny for a number of years but in recent years the sector has been experiencing severe difficulties globally."
The Tánaiste stressed that the key priority now was to ensure maximum support and assistance to those affected by these job losses.
