Police shooting to be investigated by Ombudsman
The Police Ombudsman's office has begun an investigation into the death of man who was shot by police in Lisburn last night.
Police opened fire on the car in which the man was travelling after it failed to stop at junction of Crumlin Road and Ogales Road.
Police said the vehicle had previously struck two police officers who had attempted to stop the car. One of the officers sustained injuries to his back, legs and right arm. Officers then fired on the vehicle, hitting two men.
One of the men, Neil John McConville, 21, from Bleary in Craigavon was critically injured in the shooting and later died after being taken to Lagan Valley Hospital in Lisburn.
The second man is being treated at Craigavon Area Hospital for gunshot wounds to his arm. His condition is described as "stable".
The Police Ombudsman's office said it was the first time it had been called in to examine a death involving a shooting by police officers.
The Ombudsman's Chief Investigator, David Wood, who was immediately called to the scene of the shooting, said that a weapon had been found in the car. He said that full forensic tests would be carried out on the weapon.

Community support Police Ombudsman's role
The Police Ombudsman's Office has today learned that it has equal levels of support from both Protestants and Catholic communities in Northern Ireland. According to the findings of an Independent survey, over 80% from both communities believe that the Ombudsman's Office is helping to improve the quality of policing.

Police Vehicle Contracts Arrest - Man Released
A 54-year-old member of police staff who was arrested in County Antrim as part of ongoing investigations into the awarding of vehicle contracts has been released. The man was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and has been taken to a police station in Belfast for questioning.
