Six Arrested Over Dissident Activity

Six people have been arrested and are being questioned by the PSNI in relation to suspected dissident republican activity.

Three men were detained in west Belfast on Thursday night, while two men were held in Derriaghy and a woman in Dunmurry.

They were taken to Antrim police station for questioning.

Man Arrested Following Newtownards Arson Attack

The PSNI is appealing for witnesses to an arson attack in the Pound Street area of Newtownards on Wednesday 3 April.

The fire was discovered a in a garage at the rear of a property around 23:30.

Two men who were in the house at the time escaped uninjured.

A 35 male has been arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life. He was questioned and later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who noticed any suspicious activity in the area at the time is asked to contact detectives at Newtownards on 0845 600 8000.

12-Year-Old Girls Assaulted In Downpatrick

Police in Downpatrick have appealed for appealing for information regarding reports of two assaults on 12-year-old girls in the Ballydugan road area of Downpatrick.

The incidents occurred on Saturday 30 March; the first around 15:00 outside a fashion outlet.

It is believed a 12 year old girl received an eye injury and scratches to her body after she was attacked by two older girls.

The second incident occurred a short time later near a local supermarket. It also involved a 12-year old-girl, who was allegedly pushed to the ground and had her head banged off the pavement.

Both girls have been taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries.

A motive for the attacks has yet to be established. Police are focussing on whether a link can be established between the two incidents.

Anyone who witnessed either assault or who has any information is asked to contact police at Downpatrick on 0845 600 8000.

Belfast Zoo Reopens

Belfast Zoo has reopened today following closure due to recent severe weather.

Normal opening hours have now been resumed.

The zoo closed on Friday 22 March due to severe weather conditions, which caused significant damage to the zoo's facilities.

The zoo, Belfast City Council and a range of external contractors have been working to return the site to normal conditions.

This has included removing fallen trees, enclosure repairs, clearing roads and pathways of snow and making the site both accessible and safe for animals and visitors.

New Programme To Inspire Girls To Pursue Maths
A new programme to inspire girls in Northern Ireland to continue their pursuit of maths has been launched by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and professional services firm PwC. The aim of the Maths4Girls programme is to increase engagement and interest levels of girls aged 11-14 in maths because this opens-up high-impact STEM-related careers.

New Visitor Centre For Belfast Zoo
Construction has begun on a new, £600,000 state of the art visitor centre at Belfast Zoo. The new entrance pavilion will include a new souvenir shop, pay-booths and payment systems, a covered walkway for wet weather shelter and a tourist exhibition space focussing on native and non-native wildlife.

Concerns grow about missing Greenisland girls
Police in Carrickfergus say they are increasingly concerned about the safety of two teenage girls who have not been seen since Thursday August 22. Samantha McDonald and Michelle Collins, who are both aged 15 and from the Greenisland area, were last seen at 8pm at the Shore Road home of one of the girls.
