Minister promises support for Desmonds workers
As unions and management met today in talks about the closure of Desmond & Sons factories in Northern Ireland, the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister pledged support for the 480 workers facing redundancy.
A severe blow to the Northern Ireland textiles industry, the firm have announced the closure of factories in Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh, Omagh, Co. Tyrone and Swatragh, Co. Londonderry.
In an interview Mr Pearson confirmed that all the resources available to the government would be brought to bear in an effort to help the employees facing redundancy.
He said that advice and counselling would be made available, and that this would include guidance on self-employment for the workers who were laid off.
In a statement yesterday Desmond and Sons said the company had made the cuts as a “planned reduction in production capacity”.
However, it transpired that while the firm was keeping one factory, Newbuildings in Derry, its warehouse facility and headquarters in Drumahoe open, it was planning to ramp up production in other countries.
Desmonds, which has production facilities based in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Turkey, said that there was no option but to reduce its holdings in Northern Ireland.
Local politicians were united in their condemnation of the closure programme, which would affect the local retailers and the wider economy.
