PSNI officers targeted in bomb attack
Two police officers were targeted in a coffee jar bomb attack on their vehicle in Armagh.
The attack, which has been blamed on dissident republican group the Continuity IRA, occurred at around 11.15pm on Wednesday night when a small homemade device was thrown at their car. It cracked the driver's window, but failed to explode.
The patrol car had been responding to a call from a member of the public when the device was thrown.
Condemning the attack, Newry and Armagh UUP councillor Danny Kennedy said the attack was proof that terrorist activity remained a threat in the area.
“This attack clearly demonstrates that there is an element at work in the area and the country as a whole, intent on causing death and destruction as recent incidents have proved. It would be sheer and utter folly to scale down security which there is a very real threat to peace from republican dissidents.
“There is therefore no reason for the Government to relax the security presence."
The Monaghan Road was cordoned off following the attack while a security operation was carried out. It was later reopened at about 7.30am on Thursday after Army bomb experts made the device safe.
