SMEs targeted for government funding awards
Small businesses and manufacturers are among those the Department of Trade and Industry is encouraging to apply for the next round of the government's Partnership Fund.
The £3 million fund, to be spent over the next three years, is expected to provide support for companies to develop projects between employees and employers, often through a union. To date, the fund has sponsored around 160 projects and distributed just over £5 million to develop best practice.
Junior minister Alan Johnson said: "Partnership at work is essential to attract good staff and improve productivity. It's all about employers and employees working together to solve business problems and of course, avoid some problems arising in the first place.
"Partnership encourages good communication from the bottom up so all are involved in the process. This results in a more effective use of the talents and abilities of an organisation's main assets - its people."
Peter Dugmore, employment relations director at Barclays, said: "The Partnership Fund has enabled us to roll out joint training for managers and union representatives across the company. It has helped to create a more constructive approach to employee relations in which senior management and the union work together to manage a range of issues including significant organisation change programmes."
Partnership Fund winners can receive up to a maximum of £50,000 from the DTI. The winner can come from the private, public and voluntary sectors and from both unionised and non-unionised organisations.
Successful applicants are awarded grants of up to 50% of total project costs, with the remainder being met by participating organisations.
To find out more about the Partnership Fund call the helpline on 020 7804 8044. The deadline for applications is July 31 and the winners will be announced in September.
