West Belfast Boxing Club Reopens
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has announced the re-opening of a west Belfast boxing club following a £116,000 refurbishment.
Gleann Amateur Boxing Club received the funding through the Department of Social Development (DSD)’s Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy.
The funding allowed the club to refurbish and extend its current premises at the Work West Units on the Glen Road.
The Club is open to all people and takes referrals from the Youth Justice Agency and the Probation Board NI.
Minister McCausland said: "Projects such as this one at Gleann Amateur Boxing Club are at the backbone of local communities. The contribution they make to the local community cannot be over-estimated, engaging young people and teaching them new skills including commitment and dedication. It is also very heartening to hear about the club’s plans to increase the level of female participation in the new facilities.
"I am impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of all the club volunteers and the positive impact the club is having on the children, their families and the local community. The volunteers care deeply about the work they do in the club and they are doing a great job working with young people, not only improving their personal health but boosting their self confidence and raising their aspirations.
"This is an exciting time for the club and I wish the club all the best in their refurbished facility and to continued success in the ring."

An 'education in the community' programme aimed at improving educational achievement for young people has been praised by Education Minister Peter Weir. Mr Weir was visiting Monkstown Boxing Club to meet pupils who have taken part in the ASPIRE programme, developed by Abbey Community College in partnership with the club.

Poots Meets NI 'Thank You Fund' Winners
Health Minister Edwin Poots has met with some of the winning recipients of this year's Coca-Cola Thank You Fund, which seeks to promote healthy and active living in Northern Ireland. From a total of 11 winners from across the island of Ireland, Swim Ireland was awarded the top prize of £21,000.
