NI Has 'Worst UK Construction Market'

Northern Ireland is still the worst-performing UK region within the construction sector, according to a new survey.

The latest Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) construction market survey, also revealed that while there has been some improvement, the region is lagging behind its UK counterparts.

Activity is still falling, but the UK as a whole has seen an increase in building activity, with London and the south east the best-performing regions.

Jim Sammon from RICS Northern Ireland welcomed the improvements.

He is quoted by the BBC as saying: "Whilst the rate of decline in workloads has eased significantly, workloads are still falling, and we remain some way from a recovery.

"The key challenges for the sector remain. Finance is constrained, private sector activity remains scarce, and public sector demand remains constrained."

He also asked the NI Executive to take action to increase capital spending on the region's infrastructure.

"Beyond being a driver of growth, infrastructure is the fabric of our everyday lives that must remain efficient and well maintained.
