Update: Castlewellan Security Alert Continues

A security alert in the County Down town of Castlewellan, which began on Wednesday evening, is continuing in the area.

Main roads remain closed this afternoon, Thursday 19, following the discovery of a suspicious object on Priests Road.

A public safety operation and police cordon are in place, while the Ardabannon and Castlewellan Roads remain closed to the public.

Local diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avod the area if possible.

District Commander of Newry, Mourne and Down, Superintendent Jane Humphries said: "I want to thank the community for their patience while we work to make the area safe and I would ask for their further co-operation as the investigation continues."

Local roads get record £80m spend
A record £80 million will be spent on structural roads maintenance this year across Northern Ireland. Suspicious Object Sparks Alert In Castlewellan
A police operation is ongoing in Castlewellan, County Down, following the discovery of a suspicious object. A cordon is in place and part of the Ardnabannon and Castlewellan Roads have been closed to the public while police work to make the area safe. The object was discovered in the Priests Road area of the town on Wednesday evening, 18 September.

Two People Escape Serious Injury In Light Aircraft Crash
Two people have escaped serious injury following a light aircraft crash in Co Down. The incident happened near Castlewellan Forest Park just before 5pm on Monday, 29 May. Police confirmed two people were treated at the scene in the Dolly's Bare area, however their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
