SF call for election day protest
Sinn Fein have called on people across the island of Ireland to come out on what would have been election day and demand the right to vote.
Chief negotiator Martin McGuinness today announced plans for "an island wide day of action" covering 30 cities and towns across the country.
Mr McGuinness said Prime Minister Tony Blair's decision to cancel elections had created a dangerous political vacuum.
He added: "The cancelling of elections is wrong. It is undemocratic. It is disenfranchising to the people of the six counties and it was taken against the wishes of those representing the majority of the electorate in the north and the Irish government.
"The British government cancelled the elections because they believed the outcome did not suit their gameplan. That is unacceptable.
"I want to urge people to come out on May 29th and peacefully demand your right to vote by joining protests in your local area."
Among the plans laid out by Sinn Fein, events have been organised for 30 cities and towns across Ireland including Dublin, Belfast and Londonderry.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's political parties are seeking compensation for revenue lost because of the postponed elections.
The government has already committed itself to reimbursing parties and candidates for money spent on the campaign.
However it is thought that the overall bill could rise to as much as £4 million.
