Sinn Féin To Re-Route 'IRA' Parade

Sinn Féin has agreed to re-route a memorial parade in memory of two IRA volunteers that will pass through Castlederg, County Tyrone.

The march, organised for Sunday 11 August, will no longer go past the town's Cenotaph or Methodist church.

The parade is in memory of Seamus Harvey and Gerard McGlynn: two IRA men who were killed 40 years ago when a bomb they were carrying accidentally exploded.

Unionists feel the parade is insensitive, considering the 28 civillians who were killed by the IRA in the area.

The DUP met with the Parades Commission today in a bid to have the parade banned. DUP West Tyrone MLA Thomas Buchanan led the delegation.

Mr Buchanan described the event as "obnoxious and grossly offensive".

"This is not a cultural display it is a glorification of terrorism," he said.

"28 innocent people were murdered by terrorists in the Castlederg area. The moral equivalence of this event would be for Islamist extremists to hold a similar event in London on 7th July. Such an event would be met with outrage. The innocent victims of Castlederg, many of whom have never received justice, should not be expected to accept PIRA terrorists being glorified and hailed as heroes.

"I have written to the Chief Constable asking him to recognise the toxic impact this event will have on community relations within the area. I look forward to his reply.

"Gerry Kelly of Sinn Féin has been publicised as the keynote speaker at this event. He should not only withdraw from this provocative event but the organisers should recognise its offensive nature and call it off."
