DARD Releases Food And Drinks Report

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has published its annual report, Size and Performance of the Northern Ireland Food and Drinks Processing Sector, Subsector Statistics.

The report contains data on the food and drinks processing sector in 2010 and 2011.

The report finds that the value of sales for the sector increased by 6.4% from £3,746m in 2010 to £3,985m in 2011. Provisional estimates suggest sales increased by a further 4.2% in 2012 to £4,154m.

The food and drinks processing sector contributed approximately 3.6% of Northern Ireland's total gross value added in 2011.

In 2011, the food and drinks processing sector increased its contribution to the sales (26%), external sales (23%), export sales (24%) and value added (16%) of the Northern Ireland manufacturing sector.

The beef and sheepmeat, and milk and milk products subsectors continued to be the two largest subsectors in 2010 and 2011, accounting for 49.3% and 50.1% of the sector's total gross turnover in these years, respectively.

Great Britain continued to be the largest market for sales in the sector with 40.8% and 40.0% of total sales in 2010 and 2011, respectively, while the Republic of Ireland was the most important destination for export sales, despite its share of total sales falling from 17.5% in 2010 to 16.3% of sales in 2011.

All food and drinks processing subsectors traded profitably in 2010 and 2011.

Total manufacturing sales in Northern Ireland are up 4.0% in current prices and 3.2% in real terms, according to the latest Manufacturing Sales And Export Survey. Total sales by manufacturing companies in Northern Ireland were estimated to be worth £18.1bn in 2013/14, indicating a rise of 4% over the year.

Consultation On Future Of House Sales Scheme Launched
A consultation on the future of House Sales Schemes in Northern Ireland has been launched by the Department for Communities. Currently the House Sales Schemes, which are Northern Ireland's equivalent to the 'Right to Buy' Scheme in Great Britain, are available to all Northern Ireland Housing Executive tenants and Housing Association tenants.

New figures have revealed a slight drop in the number of house sales agreed in Northern Ireland in May, despite a rise in enquiries from potential buyers and sellers. The latest survey by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Ulster Bank found anecdotal evidence some buyers were adopting a 'wait and see approach'.
