Youth Unemployment Remains Unacceptably High - Reilly

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Youth affairs Senator Kathryn Reilly has said that "youth unemployment remains unacceptably high".

Her comments were made following the publication of the Eurostat unemployment figures which show a marginal increase in youth unemployment in June of this year compared to March.

Senator Reilly said: "The Eurostat figures make for depressing reading. 55,000 young people in the state are officially unemployed. 26.5% of young people seeking work are unable to find a job. This represents a marginal increase from May to June of this year.

"These figures do not include the many more young people who have disengaged from local employment services and the thousands who have emigrated in search of work.

"The Government may try to spin the figures as a sign of progress as the number of young people officially unemployed has fallen by 4% since June 2012.

"However we know from the last CSO Quarterly Household Survey that in the last 12 months the number of young people in employment has fallen by 3%.

"Since Labour and Fine Gael took office the number of young people in employment has fallen by 14%.

"The real reasons for the fall in the official unemployment rate are emigration and disengagement from employment services.

"The Government is simply not doing enough to get young people into work. We urgently need major investment to create the jobs that young people need. Part of this must be the state wide roll out of a youth guarantee project this year."
