NI Mental Health Stats Released
The total number of admissions to hospital under mental health programmes of care (POC) has fallen by 0.7% over the past five years, from 8,123 in 2008/09 to 8,065 in 2012/13.
The total number of inpatient admissions under the mental health POC decreased by 28.5% from 6,629 to 4,741 in 2012/13, while the number of admissions for day case treatment increased from 1,494 in 2008/09 to 3,324 in 2012/13.
The statistics have been released today by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.
The report finds that between 2008/09 and 2012/13, the average length of stay within the mental health POC in hospitals decreased by 5.6 days, from 52.3 days to 46.7 days.
During 2012/13, there were 10,703 consultant-led outpatient attendances in the Belfast HSC Trust for the mental health specialties.
The number of admissions to hospital under learning disability POCs decreased by about 25% from 1,886 in 2008/09 to 1,413 in 2012/13.
Across hospitals operating learning disability POCs, the highest average length of stay was in Muckamore Abbey (459.2 days), compared with an average of 115.0 days in Longstone Hospital, 52.0 days in Lakeview, and 2.2 days in Musgrave Park (Table 2.3).

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.

Nationalists Hit Out At West Belfast Bonfire
Nationalist politicians have hit out at a bonfire that was erected in west Belfast, after it caused a daycare centre for vulnerable adults to be closed. "Anti-social behaviour" at the 'anti-internment' bonfire at Beechmount Drive is thought to have led to the closure of the Mica Day Centre.

No Smoking Day Details Outlined
A conference has heard that smokers across Northern Ireland are to be again urged to break free from their smoking habit. That was the challenge set this week by the No Smoking Day team and the Ulster Cancer Foundation at a regional conference to brief health professionals in preparation for No Smoking Day – Wednesday 14th March 2012.
