Number Of NI Hospital Beds In Decline
The number of hospital beds available in Northern Ireland has fallen by more than 18%, despite an increase in admissions and hospital occupancy rates.
The figures have been released as part of the Department of Health's 2012/13 Inpatient and Outpatient Hospital Statistics for Northern Ireland report.
In the period between 2008/09 and 2012/13, the average number of available beds decreased by 18.4% (1,418) from 7,706 to 6,288.
The average number of available beds during 2011/12 and 2012/13 fell by 2.3% (151) from 6,439 beds to 6,288 beds.
During 2012/13, there were 611,505 inpatient and day case admissions to hospital in Northern Ireland, an increase of 1.4% (8,425) on 2011/12 and up 3.7% (22,002) on the number admitted during 2008/09.
The day case rate for acute services increased from 71.9% in 2008/09 to 78.1% in 2012/13.
The occupancy rate in hospitals in Northern Ireland was 83.6% during 2012/13. This did not change from 2011/12 and was an increase from 83.0% in 2010/11.
The average length of stay in hospitals has fallen from 7.4 days in 2008/09 to 6.4 days in 2012/13, while in the last year, the average length of stay fell by 0.3 days from 6.7 days in 2011/12 to 6.4 days in 2012/13.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.
