NI Schools Consultation Extended

The Education Minister John O’Dowd has announced an extension to the public consultation period on how schools are funded in Northern Ireland.

Responses will now be accepted up to 17:00 on Friday 25 October 2013.

Announcing the move, Mr O’Dowd said: "In June I unveiled proposals to change the way funds are allocated to schools. I then launched a consultation period, lasting over 16 weeks, inviting anyone with an interest to make their views known. As of today, we have received over 6,000 responses. This has generated much interest and debate and I am pleased that people feel so passionately about the education of our young people."

"There has been strong support to date for this proposal during the consultation period. This is also evidenced through analysis of over 1,000 of the hard copy responses. Over 99% of these were in agreement with my proposal that there should be no changes to this aspect."

The Minister continued: "I would encourage anyone with an interest to put forward their views, including any alternative proposals for how we ensure schools can support pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

"I want to ensure we always put pupils first, including in the allocation of funding, and I believe that the level of interest shown in this consultation shows the passion many in our community feel about this important issue."
