Condemnation For Newry Shooting

A 50-year-old man remains critically ill in hospital after being shot in the stomach and knee.

The attack happened around 7pm on Saturday (23 November) at Parkhead Crescent, Newry, Co Down.

The incident is not believed to be paramilitary-related.

Following the shooting, the victim underwent surgery at Daisy Hill Hospital before being transferred to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

A man, understood to be 79 years of age, was arrested and has since been released on conditional bail.

Alliance Justice Spokesperson, Stewart Dickson MLA, condemned the shooting.

He said: "I am appalled at this incident. People have the right to live peacefully in their homes, without fear of being attacked.

"I completely condemn the actions of those who carried out this attack. They cannot justify their actions and will not be allowed to drag our society back to the dark days of the past.

"Those behind this incident must be taken off our streets immediately."

Dominic Bradley from the SDLP added: "This type of action has no support whatsoever in Newry and cannot be justified.

"It is wrong and no strategy, aims, or objectives can make it right.

"I would appeal to anyone who can help the police in their investigation of this crime to do so without delay. "
