Investigation Launched After Belfast Bomb
Police have launched an investigation following an the explosion of a device in Belfast's Cathedral Quarter on Friday evening, 13 December.
The device, which went off shortly before 19:00 in one of the busiest areas of Belfast, had the potential to kill or cause serious injury, according to the PSNI.
Senior Investigating Officer D/Chief Inspector Justyn Galloway said a call was made to a local newspaper, thought to be the Irish News, at about 18:00, warning of a device at a hotel in the city centre.
Police attended and commenced a search and clearance operation.
At 18:20 a member of the public brought to the attention of police officers a black bag abandoned on the footpath in Exchange Street West outside a restaurant.
Police with the assistance of business staff started to clear the area and moved about 1,000 people out. At 18:44 a small explosion occurred, causing minor damage, but no injuries.
Police said the device was similar to previous devices used by dissident republican terrorists.
D/Chief Inspector Galloway made an appeal for anyone who was in the area and saw a man wearing a black hoodie and carrying a black Slazenger holdall in or around 18:00 in the Cathedral quarter.
C/Superintendent Alan McCrum said it had been a totally reckless attack that could have killed or maimed anyone nearby when the device went off.
"This was an attack on the people of Belfast going about their normal lives on a busy night for socialising in the city. This attack ruined the night out for these people. Those who carried out this attack have nothing to offer except disruption and destruction. Police would appeal for continued Community support and vigilance on the run up to Christmas in seeking to disrupt or deter any further attack on the city."
First Minister Peter Robinson said: "I condemn this appalling attack on the city of Belfast and the innocent people who were out to enjoy the city’s Christmas festivities, in the strongest possible terms.
"Once again we are witnessing the work of a mindless minority who are intent on taking the heart out of the city and wreaking havoc on the lives and businesses of the people of Belfast and Northern Ireland.
"Their cause will not be progressed in any way by acts such as this and I would ask anyone with any scrap of information to pass it on to the PSNI without delay to ensure that those responsible for these despicable acts are brought to justice."
