NI Abortion Numbers Increase

The number of abortions carried out in Northern Ireland increased over the period 2012/13, according to the Department of Health.

There were 51 terminations of pregnancy in Northern Ireland during 2012/13, indicating an increase of 16 on the 2011/12 year and a decrease of six on the 2006/07 year.

Of the 51 terminations of pregnancy carried out in 2012/13, over a third (17) were in the South Eastern Trust. There were 50 terminations of pregnancy carried out in 2012/13 to women normally resident in Northern Ireland.

During 2012/13, there were 26 abortions carried out on women aged 30 years and over, 11 on women aged 25 to 29 and 14 on women aged 24 and under.
