NI Link With Army Office Letter Bombs

Downing Street has said that letter bombs sent to Army offices in England have "the hallmarks of Northern Ireland-related terrorism".

It is not yet clear if the devices were viable.

A shopping centre in Slough also received one of the potentially explosive parcels.

Military establishments and Royal Mail has been briefed on the issue and Prime Minister David Cameron has chaired a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee to discuss the packages.

Nigel Dodds, Democratic Unionist Party MP said he was relieved "no one has been injured", adding that, "It will only lead to further hurt and suffering. "Northern Ireland has turned a corner. We are moving forward and no one wants to go back to the bad old days."

Ivan Lewis, Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, said: "These devices bear the hallmarks of another attempt by dissidents to reverse the progress we have seen in Northern Ireland over the past 15 years”.

The Ministry of Defence said it was aware of "security incidents" and army staff were warned to be "extra vigilant.”
