DETI Must Build On Giro d'Italia Legacy
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) has been urged to capitalise on the legacy of the Giro d'Italia, with Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan saying that "unless we build on this opportunity to promote the region, the boost to the local economy could be short term."
Mr McMullan said that the Giro d'Italia passing through the Glens would be seen by millions of people worldwide and urged DETI Minister Arlene Foster to build a legacy.
"I congratulate all the villages in the Glens areas who have worked so hard to ensure that their areas are neat and tidy despite being denied funding to improve their appearance for the race," Mr McMullan said.
He added: "I am now calling on the Minister Arlene Foster to look at building a legacy on the back of this opportunity by putting money into promoting tourism in the Glens and East Antrim area.
"I intend to raise this with the Minister at the Assembly so that we have a long term strategy to promote the area and bring in more tourists to help build the local economy."
