NI Crime Increases 2.3%
Overall crime in Northern Ireland has increased by 2.3% in the year between 2012/13 to 2013/14, according to the PSNI.
The figures have been released as part of the PSNI's annual crime statistics report, which showed that over the past year, the number of crimes recorded rose from 100,389 to 102,746.
Despite this, according to the PSNI, 2013/14 is the second lowest annual level recorded in Northern Ireland since the new Home Office counting rules were introduced in 1998/99.
The Service also saw declines in robbery and criminal damage; however violence against the person, theft offences and public order offences have increased.
Street level drug dealing continued to be a priority for police across Northern Ireland. Drug seizures increased by 7.8% (4,474 incidents), with cannabis continuing to be the main substance recovered.
There was also an increase of 30.9% for racist incidents and 13.8% for homophobic incidents.
"We have been working extremely hard along with our partners to encourage victims of any hate crime to report their experiences to police however we acknowledge we have more to do to build confidence within communities that we are tackling hate crimes vigorously," a statement said.
Crimes with a domestic abuse motivation rose from 11,160 in 2012/13 to 12,720 in 2013/14.
"Our approach to dealing with domestic abuse cases is very much driven by our partnerships and the commitment we have to victims is absolute, " the PSNI said. "Those victims who do come forward show extreme bravery and it is vital that the police service is able to support them throughout the criminal justice process."
Commenting on the overall statistics Chief Constable Matt Baggott said: "While we have seen a slight increase in recorded crime for 2013/14 it is worth noting that this follows four years of decreasing crime levels. Despite the fact that this has been a challenging time for police I am extremely proud of the continuing commitment shown by officers and staff to make Northern Ireland safer for everyone."
