Dodds Slams 'Travelling Circus' Two-Seat EU System
DUP MEP Diane Dodds has described the two-seat system in the European Parliament as a "waste of taxpayers' money" and "a matter of embarrassment for EU officials."
Currently, EU Parliament meetings are held in Brussels and Strasbourg; Brussels being the Parliament's headquarters and the EU's political capital and Strasbourg being the parliament's official 'Seat'.
"Last November, members of the European Parliament voted to end the travelling circus that sees each MEP load all their files in to boxes and move down the road to Strasbourg for one week per month," she said.
"This crazy practice is a source of embarrassment for EU officials. Indeed, the waste of €180m each year is an apt summary of how the EU operates. Despite a vote being taken to end the practice, the French refuse to surrender the believed prestige of the Parliament sitting in their jurisdiction."
Mrs Dodds serves on the Steering Group of the 'Single Seat' campaign, which seeks to remove the two-seat system.
