NI Tourism On The Rise
The number of overnight trips in Northern Ireland increased by 2% over the period January – December 2013, when compared to the same period the previous year, according to figures released by the Executive.
Tourist expenditure during these overnight trips increased over the same period by 5% to £723m, when compared to 2012.
The estimated number of overnight visitors from outside Northern Ireland rose by 6% to 2.1m in 2013, when compared to 2012. The expenditure associated with these trips increased by 9% (to £531m) over the same period.
This increase was due to a 13% rise in visits from residents of Great Britain and a 2% increase in overseas visitors, but included a drop in the number of overnight visitors from the Republic of Ireland.
The 6% increase in external visitors also reflected an increase in the number of trips made by such visitors to NI to visit friends or relatives (14%) and for business purposes (6%) in 2013.
The number of holiday visits from GB residents rose 5%, while the number from overseas increased 7%. However, there was a 15% fall in the number of overnight (holiday) visitors from the RoI.
Over 13m visits were made to visitor attractions in Northern Ireland in 2013, indicating an increase of 6.5% on 2012. Country parks/parks/forests accounted for the largest proportion of visitors in 2013, at 21%.
