Galloway Ulster Hall Event To Go Ahead

Belfast City Council has confirmed that an Ulster Hall event featuring Respect MP George Galloway will go ahead, despite protestation from the DUP.

The DUP had called for the event to be cancelled and had urged the City Council to use its powers to block Mr Galloway from speaking. It made the call after the Bradford MP told his constituents to reject all Israeli goods, services, academics and tourists over the recent escalation of violence in Gaza.

But Belfast City Council said: "Following a request for a review of the decision to grant the use of the Ulster Hall for an event involving George Galloway, Belfast City Council has received legal advice confirming that any decision to terminate the contract in question is likely to lead to a claim for breach of contract and/or a challenge by way of judicial review in respect of freedom of expression. The event will, therefore, proceed as planned."

Mr Galloway said in a statement on his website: "I'm stunned and really, really pleased that this is such a hit. I always receive a great reception in the north of Ireland but this surpasses anything in the past. I am honoured and grateful to the people of Belfast and beyond and I can promise a cracking show."
