Injured female police officer regains consciousness
The police officer who was left severely injured when an attacker beat her about the head with an iron bar has regained consciousness.
The 54-year-old female officer was attacked by the man in the early hours of Monday morning whilst on duty inside Lisburn Police Station. She suffered severe head injuries and was left in a critical condition in hospital.
However, police today confirmed she was now awake and speaking to her family. She is also able to take small amounts of food and water.
Her attacker has since been committed to secure accommodation under the Mental Health Order. The 30-year-old man, who is believed to be from the Republic of Ireland, gained access to a private part of Lisburn police station where the assault took place.
A male colleague also suffered head injuries during the incident. He was later discharged from hospital.

The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

The man complained that the officer had without warning hit his head against the window and then caused him to choke by continuing to press on his head and neck.

Toomebridge attack man in 'serious' condition
An 18-year-old man is in a serious condition following an attack in Toomebridge, County Antrim.
