Coleraine Arson Attack 'Attempted Murder'

Police are treating an arson attack on a Coleraine home in which a family of four escaped injury as attempted murder.

The property at Rinvarna Court in the Co L'Derry town was attacked on Sunday night.

Police and fire and ambulance crews attended the scene.

Two members of the family were rescued with the help of people in the area at the time. All four were taken to hospital. Two were treated for smoke inhalation.

The front of the property was substantially damaged in the attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Catherine Magee said: "This is a very serious incident and we are extremely lucky we are not investigating the death of a young family.

"We are at the early stages of this investigation and I would appeal to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information to contact detectives in Coleraine on the non-emergency number 101."

The independent charity Crimestoppers can also be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
