NIE condemn vandalism of substation
Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) has today condemned vandals who damaged electricity equipment at Killyclogher on Tuesday.
A number of customers lost electricity supply and further customers had to be taken off supply to facilitate the replacement of damaged insulators after the attack on St Mary's Road substation.
Fiona McClintock, NIE Customer Relations Manager said: “Vandalism to electricity equipment can cause death. Damage of this nature could have caused a loss of electricity supply to a large number of customers in the area.
“It is impossible to make equipment completely resistant to determined acts of vandalism. The best remedy would be if the people involved can be persuaded to stop putting themselves at risk and their neighbours to great inconvenience.
NIE has also issued a strong warning to farmers to take extra caution when working in the vicinity of overhead electricity equipment, especially at times when visibility is poor. The appeal follows an incident near Limavady also on Tuesday where a silage trailer struck and damaged overhead line.
The number of farming related damages to the high voltage electricity network has now reached 18 since the beginning of the year.

Detectives from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force have made a significant drug seizure in Omagh. Officers searched a van in the Doogary Road area on Thursday morning, 21st November, and recovered a substantial quantity of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of £750,000.

Minister announces £30m electricity initiative
Enterprise Minister, Ian Pearson has announced plans to invest £30 million in a new initiative aimed at reducing electricity bills for Northern Ireland's businesses. It is hoped that the funding, which is part of a draft budget, will help businesses save 10% on their electricity bills.

Electrocution Warning After Ten Deaths
Ten people have died from touching overhead power lines since 2001, Northern Ireland Electricity has warned. The electricity network launched a major campaign today to make farmers, contractors, DIY enthusiasts and others aware of the dangers of felling trees and cutting hedges near lines.
