Fears grow of strike as postal talks breakdown
A breakdown in talks to resolve a postal workers pay dispute has raised fears of the first postal workers strike in seven years.
Discussions between the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and the management side of the Royal Mail held at the conciliation service yesterday ended without agreement.
The CWU will now ballot its members with the results of the ballot to be announced next month.
Management offered 14.5% over 18 months but the CWU branded the offer as “dishonest” and claimed that the award tabled would only be 3% from October to be followed by 1.5% in April 2004.
Previous talks had indicated that Royal Mail were suggesting that 30,000 redundancies were being sought.
Royal Mail, which is losing £750,000-a-day, is seeking radical cutbacks in staffing and the introduction of single delivery schedules.

Derry postal workers threaten industrial action
Following the two-week unofficial postal strike in Belfast, there are fears that postal workers in Londonderry may take a similar action if a row with Royal Mail is not resolved. The row relates to proposals which are likely to change the way staff carry out their jobs and receive payment.

Postal Workers Take Strike Action
Postal workers in Northern Ireland will commence the first of two 48-hour strikes today. The industrial action is taking place due to a dispute with Royal Mail over pay and changes to the business. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said yesterday that negotiations failed to resolve the issue and therefore the planned strike would go ahead.

Talks to continue to prevent postal strike
Talks between the Communications Workers Union and Royal Mail are to resume today in a bid to prevent another postal strike. Today's meeting is expected to discuss the appointment of a third party to help deal with relations between management and union representatives as agreed under the terms that brought the two-week dispute to an end.

Royal Mail workers go on unofficial strike
Royal Mail workers at Belfast’s Tomb Street depot are currently engaged in unofficial strike action over the return to work of a manager who allegedly assaulted an employee. Around 350 workers walked out this morning in response to the decision made by Consignia to reinstall the manager to frontline supervisory duties.
