Local firms up for UK business awards
Twenty-five organisations in Northern Ireland have been selected for the regional shortlist of a major UK wide business awards.
The 2003 UK Online for Business/InterForum E-Commerce Awards, which are sponsored in Northern Ireland by Invest NI, aim to recognise and reward organisations that have demonstrated tangible business benefits through their use of Internet and information and communications technologies.
The awards fall into four categories: E-Business Start-ups, E-Business, E-Trading and achievements in the Voluntary & Community Sector. Following the regional judging, a winner from each category will receive a cheque for £2,000. The winners will be announced at an Invest NI awards ceremony to be held on 19 September at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast.
Stephen McArdle, UK Online for Business Regional Champion for Northern Ireland, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see so many local organisations using technologies to really transform the way they work.
“Nearly 3,000 companies entered the awards this year so even to make the regional shortlist is a real achievement for any local firm and demonstrates the great advances many businesses in the region are making with their use of ICTs.”
Regional category winners will go on to compete for the £8,000 national category winner prize at the national final on 8 October. This will be followed by a showdown in which the final four national category winners will go head to head for the title of E-Commerce Awards Champion 2003 and the top prize of £30,000.

NI Film Fails To Impress At Oscars
There was disappointment in Los Angeles overnight for Northern Ireland after the movie 'short', The Crush, lost out to God of Love in the Live Action Short category at the Oscars ceremony. However, British film The King's Speech reigned supreme at this year's Oscars by winning four awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
