Fall in NI road traffic accidents
Road traffic accidents in Northern Ireland have fallen by 8% during 2002-2003 compared to the previous year, the latest figures have revealed.
The figure, which was contained in the Northern Ireland Transport Statistics, showed that accidents fell from 7,140 to 6,598 and the number of road casualties also fell by 8% from 12,603 to 11,546.
However, the number of deaths resulting from road accidents increased from 153 to 158 compared to 118 since January 1, 2003.
The statistics also indicate a 3.5% increase in the number of vehicles on the road in Northern Ireland, a slight increase in numbers using Ulsterbus and Northern Ireland Rail and a slight decrease in people using Citybus.
Today's statistics for 2002-2003 contains information on vehicle registrations, driver and vehicle testing, road network, freight, road safety, public transport, air transport and general transport statistics.

Road death figures are lowest in 50 years
Figures released today by the Department of the Environment have revealed that road deaths in Northern Ireland last year were at the lowest level in 50 years. The total number of road deaths in 2005 totalled 136, the lowest number since 1952 when 133 people lost their lives at at time when there was one eighth of the number of vehicles on the road.

Alliance Calls For Action On Road Deaths
The Alliance Party has urged road users to "heed calls to curb dangerous driving as road deaths increase in Northern Ireland. There have been 58 deaths on the roads so far this year, compared to 55 fatalities for the entire year in 2022.
