Pipe Bomb Type Device Found In West Belfast

A pipe bomb type device has been discovered in west Belfast.

The "crude but viable" device was found during a security alert in the Rodney Drive area on Tuesday morning.

Police and army bomb disposal experts attended the scene and residents had to be evacuated from their homes.

The device was made safe and the alert has now ended.

The road has been reopened and residents have returned to their homes.

Sinn Féin Councillor Ciaran Beattie said: "Those behind the leaving of this device in a garden at Rodney Drive have shown absolute disregard for this community.

"Not only is a dangerous device left on a built up residential street where it could have caused serious injury to anyone passing but the residents of the street have also had to be evacuated disrupting their lives.

"These actions are unacceptable. Those responsible need to get off the back of this community."
