Elderly Residents Evacuated After Arson Attack In Newcastle

A number of elderly people had to be evacuated from their homes due to a fire overnight in Co Down.

A total of 50 firefighters attended the scene at Bracken Avenue in Newcastle.

It is believed the fire was started deliberately in an oil tank.

Twelve homes were evacuated and four of them have been badly damaged.

The blaze at the block of flats spread very quickly and a specialist high reach appliance and seven pumps were used to put out the fire.

One man was treated at the scene, however there are no reports of any injuries.
