Union Seeks Meeting To Discuss Recycling Jobs

GMB Scotland, the union of refuse, recycling and street cleaning workers, has written a letter to Glasgow City Council seeking an immediate meeting to discuss the withdrawal of 100 permanent positions that were to be made available to current cleansing operatives and apprentices.

The jobs were to come from the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 which placed a statutory duty on all local authorities to provide households with a separate food waste collection service by 1st January 2016.

Benny Rankin, GMB Scotland officer, said: "At a meeting last year Glasgow City Council stated that 100 new jobs would be available for all current cleansing operatives to apply for, including the apprentices who had recently been recruited to the Cleansing Department on 4 week temporary rolling contracts.

"This was welcomed by GMB Scotland, as it gave our young members in Land & Environment Services (LES) future permanent employment instead of the uncertain future that 4 week temporary rolling contracts provide.

"However, on Tuesday 01 March 2016, at a Departmental meeting with LES, GMB Scotland was informed that the 100 new permanent positions no longer existed and that the personnel required to facilitate this service would instead be sourced from Business Jobs Glasgow and that these personnel would only be offered 6 month temporary contracts with further 6 month temporary contracts being offered upon completion and suitability.

"This is a complete smack in the face to the young people of Glasgow, who are the future of the City.

"This Government funded scheme was the perfect opportunity to provide our young men and women stability and a future within the Council by attaining full time permanent employment."
