NI To Receive Funding For Air Ambulance Service
Chancellor George Osbourne has announced Northern Ireland is to receive funding for an air ambulance service.
He confirmed the £4.5 million will be used from LIBOR banking fines to help set up the service.
Northern Ireland is currently the only region in the UK which does not have a helicopter emergency medical service.
Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin welcomed the announcement.
She said: "I welcome today's announcement that £4 million is to be made available for an air ambulance service for the North.
"The £4 million earmarked in the British government's budget, which was announced today will be used to deliver an air ambulance service similar to the service in Wales.
"While today's announcement is welcome, any air ambulance service should operate on an all-island basis.
"Emergency situations do not recognise borders and the air ambulance service should be available to everyone, regardless of where they live."

Northern Ireland Ambulance Service is recruiting for new helicopter paramedics to be based at the Air Ambulance base at Maze Long Kesh in Lisburn and Emergency Ambulance Control at NIAS HQ in Belfast. Successful candidates will join the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) team which is made up of 15 doctors and seven paramedics.

A new air ambulance service is to become fully operational today, 02 August. The service will be based at the former Maze prison site near Lisburn and will be able to reach any part of NI within 25 minutes.

Northern Ireland's air ambulance service has been deployed 3,000 times since it officially launched in 2017. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), which operates for 12 hours every day throughout the year, is marking it’s fifth anniversary today, 22 July.

First Minister Arlene Foster and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness made the announcement.
