Suspended Staff Cost PSNI Over £500,000
The PSNI has paid more than £500,000 to 16 civilian staff while on suspension with full pay, according to a report by the BBC.
It is understood that the information was contained in a Freedom of Information request seen by the BBC and relate to suspensions of staff between April 2014 and September 2015.
In that period, a total of £519,623 was paid to the civilian staff in salaries, national insurance and pension contributions.
The circumstances of the suspensions are not made clear, but the BBC highlight that civilian staff are expected to follow a Civil Service Code of Ethics, and can be suspended while misconduct allegations are investigated.
A spokesperson for the PSNI told the BBC: "Examples of issues where a member of staff may be suspended include alcohol and substance misuse, theft or fraud, assault or threatening behaviour, or misuse of computer systems."
