Kennedy welcomes cigarette seizure
Security Minister Jane Kennedy has welcomed yesterday's arrest of nine people in relation to the alleged smuggling of counterfeit cigarettes from the Far East.
The minister said that the operation had been aimed at dismantling a sophisticated smuggling and distribution network.
Ms Kennedy said: "This notable success is a further manifestation of the benefits of the multi-agency approach in tackling organised crime.
"By working together, law enforcement agencies are making it increasingly difficult for organised criminals to profit from their crime."
Seven men and two women were arrested on Tuesday after cigarettes, believed to have been manufactured in China, were shipped into Southampton and Belfast in freight containers.
During July and August 2003, 10 sea containers were intercepted, and in excess of 23 million cigarettes were seized concealed within consignments of furniture.

'Little Difference' Between Smoking & Vaping
E-cigarettes may be just as risky as tobacco smoking in terms of their potential to cause harm in the lungs, researchers have warned. Experts at Queen's University Belfast found "little difference" between cigarette smoke and e-cigarette vapour and the changes they cause to bacteria in the lungs.

Five men arrested following cigarette seizure
Five men have been arrested after more than 500,000 stolen or counterfeit cigarettes were seized by police in the Markets area of Belfast. The cigarettes were found when officers searched a number of cars in McAuley Street and Friendly Way on Thursday. A quantity of counterfeit DVDs were also seized.
