Minister challenges illegal fuel users
Security Minister and Chair of the Organised Crime Task Force (OCTF), Jane Kennedy today warned motorists intent on breaking the law that "your chances of getting caught are increasing all the time".
The Minister was speaking during a visit to an OCTF multi-agency vehicle checkpoint (VCP) at Yorkgate, Belfast, which was set up to detect illegal fuel and non compliance in the road user sector.
In praising the work of those involved in the operation Ms Kennedy said: "Tackling oils fraud is a top priority of the Organised Crime Task Force. As well as the obvious loss of revenue to the Exchequer, the criminals who deal in this unadulterated fuel are endangering both the public and the environment through the dumping of waste product and chemicals which they use during the laundering process.
"They endanger public safety as they transport this potential fireball in highly dangerous, non secure vehicles and of course they threaten the very livelihood of the legitimate retailer.
"And those who feel they are getting a 'bargain' by purchasing this fuel may ultimately pay a heavy price when their car engine is irreparably damaged."
The Customs led operation, codenamed 'Operation Journal', involved a number of agencies including PSNI Traffic Branch, Driver Vehicle Licensing, Vehicle Clamping Unit, Automatic Number Plate Reader Unit, a DOE Enforcement Team, as well as three HMCE Specialist Road Fuel Testing Units and one HMCE anti-smuggling team.
Today's operation coincides with an advertising campaign which recognises the specific oils fraud problem faced by the authorities in Northern Ireland.

Gas Price Hike 'Fuels Winter Woes'
The gas supplier, Firmus Energy has ended its previously announced summer price freeze and is set to increase tariffs by over 35% from 1 October - fuelling fears over 'fuel poverty' among the most needy. It has around 8,500 customers in the greater Belfast area - compared to competitor, Phoenix Gas - that has more than 130,000.

Around 500 vehicles were stopped during an hour long multi-agency vehicle checkpoint (VCP) in Belfast yesterday. Under the auspices of the Organised Crime Task Force, the operation, codenamed 'Operation Journal', was set up to detect use of illegal fuel and other infringements by road users.

£17m To Support Pensioners Affected By Winter Fuel Payment Changes
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a £17 million fund to support pensioners who have lost eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment due to recent UK government changes. The one-off £100 payment will be automatically issued to an estimated 250,000 pensioners in around 170,000 households before the end of March 2025.

Govt Must Take 'Serious Action' To Reduce Fuel Prices
With 50% of the cost of a litre of petrol or diesel going to the Treasury, the Government must take serious action to reduce fuel prices across the United Kingdom, DUP Treasury Spokesman Sammy Wilson has said. Mr Wilson said: "Fuel duty and VAT make up 50% of the cost of our fuel with green taxes attributing another 7%.
