Electricity cut leaves 1,300 homes without power

Over 1,300 homes in Co Down were left without electricity supplies on Wednesday following severe damage to an underground high voltage electricity cable in the area.

The damage was caused by a contractor working on drainage at a nearby golf club and it left residents in the Marino and Craigavad areas of Holywood without power for a couple of hours.

Commenting on the problem, Valerie Curran, NIE Customer Relations Manager said: "Luckily in this incident no-one was injured. We advise any contractors to contact NIE on 08457 643 643 for marked up drawings of the underground electricity network before starting work.

"With good working practices the number of faults of this sort could be radically reduced."
