New Search Begins For Arlene Arkinson

A fresh search for missing teenager Arlene Arkinson is to take place in Co Tyrone.

Ms Arkinson, from Castlederg, was 15-years-old when she went missing in 1994 after a night out in the Republic of Ireland. Her body has never been found.

It is understood police cordoned off an area near Killen, just outside Castlederg on Thursday night. The area is close to where Arlene was last seen alive with convicted child killer and rapist Robert Howard. Mr Howard was the main suspect in the teenager's disappearance.

Arlene's sister, Kathleen, has said news of the search came "out of the blue".

Police have spent the past four days at the Killen site after they received a report from a farmer who became suspicious after finding a mound of clay and stones behind a derelict house.

Detective Chief Superintendent Raymond Murray is quoted as saying: "The family of Arlene Arkinson have been advised of this development purely as a precautionary measure. It would be premature to draw any inference from this initial report or the police response to it at this time."

Howard died in prison in England last year. In 2005 he was found not guilty of murdering Arlene Arkinson, but the jury was unaware that he was already serving a life sentence for raping and killing another teenager.
