Minister Supports Bid To Host 2023 Rugby World Cup
Economy Minister Simon Hamilton has delivered a commitment by the Executive to support the bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
He said: "To bring the Rugby World Cup 2023 to our shores would be a great sporting achievement.
"Our bid not only has the support of both governments, the rugby and sporting fraternity are behind it and we all want to see it through from this exciting and important stage to a successful hosting of the tournament in seven years time.
"We have experience in delivering major events and next year we will have the opportunity to host the Women's Rugby World Cup with the play-off games and finals set to be played at Queen's University and the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast. This will further demonstrate our ability to host major sports events as well as being a huge boost for sport."
The selection process will run from now until November 2017, when World Rugby will decide on the successful candidate to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup. During that period a detailed technical evaluation of the candidates will take place, with final proposals being submitted in June and a presentation to World Rugby scheduled for October.
Work Complete To Upgrade 400 Rural Roads In NI
Work to upgrade 400 rural roads in Northern Ireland has been completed following the launch of a £10 million initiative.
The Rural Roads scheme secured £10m in June this year to improve roads in rural communities.
Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard said: "I am delighted that just five months on from announcing £10 million for a rural roads improvement initiative, 400 stretches of roads in rural communities across the north have been upgraded and resurfaced.
"This demonstrates actual delivery on the ground for rural communities across the region. This work will now continue over the coming months to see improvements made on the condition of around 1000 roads."
McMurray Selected As Alliance Cllr
The Alliance Party has selected Andy McMurray as its newest Councillor for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to represent the Slieve Croob area.
Mr McMurray is an outdoor instructor and youth worker at the Ardnabannon Outdoor Education Centre.
He said: "Throughout the entirety of my life Northern Irish politics has been dominated by the competing narratives of Unionism/Nationalism Loyalism/Republicanism. I have never felt comfortable subscribing to any of these.
"Alliance is the only party that cannot be bounded by these narratives. I am a firm believer of middle ground politics. Be this in the Northern Irish context or the wider left/right spectrum. Other local parties masquerade as being of the 'middle ground', but only Alliance has the track record and vision to deliver a truly shared society."
