Mivan named as UK’s top construction firm

A leading Northern Ireland construction company has been named 2003 British Construction Firm of the Year at a top UK building awards gala.

Antrim-based Mivan was responsible for specialist construction work on the theme-park ride, ‘Mission: SPACE’ at Epcot in the Walt Disney World Resort, Florida. This earned the company a major award at last week's British Consultants & Construction Bureau (BCCB) International Expertise Awards.

Commenting on the award, Mivan CEO, Dr Ivan McCabrey, said: “We are delighted to receive this award and it is a tribute to everyone who worked on the project.

"'Mission: SPACE' was an extremely complex and technically challenging contract and this award recognises Mivan’s strong working relationship with Disney in delivering such projects within budget and on time.”

Walt Disney Imagineering spent five years designing 'Mission: SPACE', which sends guests on a simulated astronaut-training mission to Mars.

In the process they consulted with present and former NASA advisors and astronauts and with scientists from the California Institute of Technology’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Mivan managed 38 subcontractors and up to 300 workers in the construction of 'Mission: SPACE'. The theme-park ride, which is presented by HP (Hewlett-Packard) was officially launched in October of this year.

This is the first time a Northern Ireland company has won this award in the event’s eight-year history.

Past winners include UK construction giants Taylor Woodrow and Arup.
