Derry landmark is NI's Building Of The Year
Londonderry’s Millennium Forum has cemented its place as Northern Ireland’s building of the year.
The landmark event, concert and exhibition centre claimed the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Northern Ireland ‘Excellence in the Built Environment Award 2003’, sponsored by MD&C Laser Processes, at an awards ceremony at Belfast’s Malone House.
The Newmarket Street building, which has played a key role in the regeneration of Derry city-centre since opening in August 2001, beat off competition from six other shortlisted buildings from across Northern Ireland to take the overall prize.
RICS Northern Ireland Director Ian Murray congratulated the Millennium Forum, saying that the winner of the prestigious award must combine financial viability, sustainability, and a positive community impact with an obvious visual appeal.
“The RICS Northern Ireland ‘Excellence in the Built Environment Awards, which are sponsored by Belfast-based MD&C Laser Processes, look at more than aesthetical appearance”, he said.
“Real sustainability is sought, as well as value for money, impact on the local community and ongoing viability in terms of occupational use are all taken into account."
Playing a major role in the regeneration of the city centre, the Millennium Forum is equipped for a range of events, concerts and exhibitions and can cater for audiences of up to 1,100 people.
