Payment Rates For Small Dairy Farmers Announced

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) today announced details of payments for small dairy farmers in Northern Ireland, under the EU Exceptional Adjustment Aid (EAA) package.

A spokesperson said: "£1.6m is being set aside to fund the Small Dairy Farmer scheme in Northern Ireland. The rate of payment is 0.2 pence per litre. This means that eligible farmers will receive an average payment of around £750. Payment is capped at 500,000 litres of production."

The Small Dairy Farmer scheme, launched in May 2017, is the fourth element of the NI EAA package.

The Rural Payments Agency is administering the scheme on DAERA's behalf and payments to eligible dairy farmers are expected to be made by 19 September.

NIHE Slammed For Refusing To Vest Land For Social Homes In North Belfast

The Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has been slammed for refusing to vest land for social housing at a site in north Belfast.

Belfast City Council recently approved plans for a retail only development to be built at the site.

However, Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín wrote to the Housing Executive stressing that it should vest a section of the site for social housing.

She said: "It is deeply disappointing that they have now responded stating that they do not intend to vest partly because of the reluctance of the current owner to sell the land.

"However, the entire point of vesting powers is to allow for compulsory purchase in order to address a wider public need.

"In the case of Hillview there is an obvious and growing need for social housing in what is one of the North's most disadvantaged communities. I am calling on the Housing Executive to review this inexplicable decision immediately."

Council Supports Alliance Amendment Condemning Trump's Comments

Belfast City Council has backed an Alliance amendment to a motion condemning recent comments made by US President Donald Trump.

The amendment, submitted by Councillor Michael Long, said President Trump's comments following events in Charlottesville lacked clarity and failed to condemn the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi gangs.

"The President has a history of comments showing misogyny, xenophobia and racism. It is disgraceful and there is no place for it in the world," said Councillor Long.

"This amendment outlined the need for all of us to challenge racism and unfairness wherever we see it. Sometimes a face to face challenge is most effective, such as Justin Trudeau challenging the Pope about institutional abuse or Enda Kenny reminding Trump about the benefits of immigration."
