Call For UVF To Withdraw Threats Made To Catholic Families

Sinn Fein has called on the UVF to withdraw threats made to Catholic families living in south Belfast.

Four families have been forced to leave their homes in Cantrell Close after being ordered to leave the area.

Gerry Kelly MLA also urged the PSNI to bring those involved to justice.

He made the call after PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton stated that he believed it was the UVF who were responsible for the threats.

Mr Kelly said: "The Chief Constable has now confirmed what was well known locally, that the UVF was involved in the intimidation of four Catholic families from homes in Cantrell Close in East Belfast.

"These families have had to leave their homes under threat.

"What is needed now is for the UVF to publicly withdraw these threats immediately and desist from this sectarian campaign.

"It is 2017. The UVF continues to be involved in murder, racketeering, extortion, drug dealing and issuing sectarian threats. They have no other purpose than to serve their own ends.

"The people involved in this intimidation need to be brought before the courts and we will continue to press the PSNI to bring charges against those involved."
